'The Vampire Diaries' stars have DECIDED to end Their relationship, multiple sources confirm.

Thursdays are always exciting for fans of The Vampire Diaries, but this week is a little different. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev - who Began quietly dating after meeting on the set of Their hit CW series - have ended Their relationship.

Fortunately, there is some good news to come out of this tragedy:

Ian, 34, and Nina, 24, are "consumate professionals," a source tells. The actors "will continue to work together and remainings best friends, Which is where the relationship started."

With nearly 4 million Twitter followers, Ian Clearly has a large social media presence, and one of his Most Recent tweets ice raising fans' eyebrows.

"A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: People change and forget to tell eachother," Ian tweeted May 9, attributing the quote to playwright Lillian Hellman.

This was, in all likelihood, a completely innocent tweet - but in this day-and-age of over-analysis, you can imagine the fans are going nuts over it.

Nina and Ian have done a very good job of keeping Their relationship private, but in a candid interview with Seventeen in Sept. 2012, Nina finally opened up about dating her co-star.

"I did not want to be dating one of my co-stars," Nina told the mag. "My goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can not help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long - Which I did for a really, really long time. "
